Dowding, Butler push Republic of Fremantle

Plans to turn a defunct scuba equipment shop into a small bar called Republic of Fremantle have received the thumbs’ up of 20 port city luminaries including former state premier Peter Dowding and high profile sing-song man John Butler.

A small bar application by Nan Pty Ltd, which is directed by several blokes who among them had a hand in erecting the nearby Bread in Common restaurant and operate the X-Wray Cafe, enlists the support of 20 big fishes from the Fremantle pond.

Among the score of Fremantle figures to have scribbled letters of support are John Butler of trio fame, and former Western Australian premier Peter Dowding.

The Republic of Fremantle liquor licence application claims, incorrectly, that the hand-picked sample of 20 local elites is a representative one.

If eventually approved, Republic of Fremantle will fill the pictured warehouse building at 5 Nairn Street which was once a scuba equipment shop but has been vacant for some time.

In other Fremantle grog news, Luna on SX cinemas has has also applied for a liquor licence which if granted will make Luna the only movie house in Freo where you can buy a beer. One gentleman enlisted to support the Luna application, Jon Lamotte, opines that: “watching movies with alcohol [will] enhance the experience”.
