Jean Michel Jarre shunted to late 2014

CHRIS THOMSON

NOVEMBER 30, 2012 UPDATE: A largely free, 80,000-patron gig by French electronic music pioneer Jean Michel Jarre that could bring Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco to Perth and directly inject $30 million into the local economy has been postponed until late 2014.

Perth-based promoter Maryanne Bell today confirmed the deferral and revealed the City of Fremantle had approached her in a bid to poach the concert from the City of Perth.

Ms Bell has pulled a $100,000 sponsorship request from the City of Perth, after oneperth.com.au told her that council officers had recommended against it.

After hearing the news last week, Ms Bell said the concert was being threatened by a lack of council and government vision.

The event had been planned for Perth’s Langley Park on March 23 next year – but will now be shunted to May 2014.

“I can guarantee it will go ahead then,” Ms Bell said.

Ms Bell said Fremantle council had told her that if Perth City Council “was not willing to embrace this event” the port city would be happy to oblige.

“Perth is our first choice for obvious reasons,” she said.

“It doesn’t mean to say we can’t promote the City of Fremantle.”

Last week, Ms Bell said she was dismayed that city officials had not kept her in the loop.

She then revealed that WA Government promotions agency Eventscorp had refused another sponsorship request from her for $2 million.

Eventscorp Executive Director Gwyn Dolphin later told oneperth.com.au his agency had received a new proposal for the concert that was currently being assessed.

$30 MILLION MAN

Ms Bell estimates the Jarre juggernaut would bring $30 million of direct tourism expenditure to Perth.

“It is just incredible they are not embracing [the concert],” she said.

“This shows, absolutely, a lack of vision.

“It’s Perth – it’s like village politics here.”

Perth mayor Lisa Scaffidi was contacted for comment but failed to respond.

Ms Bell said that Jarre, who had visited Perth twice now – including as an ambassador for the recent Perth Fashion Festival – was a big fan of the world’s most isolated metropolis.

“Jean-Michel was gracious enough to support the Perth Fashion Festival and there was no cost to the PFF,” Ms Bell said.

“If the concert is not held in Perth, there will be no recognition of the city, and people just won’t come here.

“If [instead] he does Sydney or Melbourne, Perth will look ridiculous.

“If it was in Paris or New York they would have embraced Jean-Michel, but in Perth you are up against the mentality of ‘Perth – wait a while’.”

oneperth.com.au asked Ms Bell if the lack of financial commitment might be because Jarre was hardly a household name in Western Australia.

“You’d be surprised at his fan base in Perth,” she said.

“The vision is that there is going to be one huge sea of people in Langley Park.

“We are planning 22 [light] towers, up to 15-storeys high.”

MONACO ROYALS

Jean Michel Jarre Rendez-Vous Perth

The man (above) and his massive concert plan.

Ms Bell said Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco, former French president Nicholas Sarkozy, and UK actress Charlotte Rampling – all friends of Jarre – had expressed interest in attending the mega-gig.

She estimated the concert would attract $8.6 million of tourism expenditure, a $14.4 million hospitality spend from visiting VIPs, and a live internet viewing audience of 3.2 billion people.

If Jarre can pull off the gargantuan ‘Rendez-Vous Perth’ gig it will be free to the public – except for 8000 privileged patrons holding gold, VIP and corporate tickets.

Jarre, 63, holds the music world’s crowd-pulling record of 3.5 million fans to a single show.

In Perth, he plans to lock Langley Park down for a month to allow massive stages and stands to be erected, as pictured.

To help concert-goers see Jarre, six giant screens would stand along the length of Langley Park.

The concert was initially planned to occur in November 2012 – but the military-scale logistics involved in pulling the show together were considered too big for a rush-job.

Jarre fan sites around the world have been aTwitter since oneperth.com.au revealed details of the concert.

The spectacular would be the only one by Jarre in Australia.

Perth by this saga that has drawn out for years now you have just stated to the world that you are the absolute backwater of Australia. Let’s organise this in Melbourne where at least they are up for the task of holding such a huge event and gaining millions if not billions in revenue (and it will save all us east coasters the airfare)!!! Shame on whoever can’t grasp the enormity of the following here of this musical genius, I’ve waited 25 years to be a part of this truly amazing experience, other fans have waited longer! Catch up to the present day WA….

I don’t think this concert will ever happem, it’s a shame really 🙁

  3. Robi says:

    not likely…

  4. Matthew Sullivan says:

its now October 2014, Is there any likely chance at all that Jean Michel will perform a concert in Perth.

  5. Robi says:

    Good morning Robert,

Thank you for your email. I have looked into your query for you and as far as we are aware Jean Michel Jarre is not scheduled to perform at a City of Fremantle event in the near future.

    Kind regards,

    Tessa Davey

    Human Resources Administration Officer
    City of Fremantle

  6. Robi says:

No news as of yet… 🙁

  7. Bill The Geek says:

Is there any update on when this will happen or is this gig as substantial as a fart in a hurricane?

  8. Mike Arch says:

Please come to Sydney where you will be more appreciated . please don’t waste your time with a dirt grovel patch like Perth. It’s a very boring place and that’s the last place you should be going. It wont generate money for Perth ans people will just come for your concert there and catch the next flight back to Sydney the moment your concert finishes. Australia has always had a lack of vision with its sport drenched culture so why open their tiny & closed minds? Leave the ants in the holes and come to Sydney where at least it has the illusion of culture.

  9. James says:

We need to See JMJ .. He is a superb, somebody that changed music, He is biggest alive artist … We want to see him in Australia, Come on Perth! or Any other cities, we are not that small! Welcome JMJ! We are all your fans!

  10. Michael says:

Bring jarre to Brisbane lost of fans here and would love to see him….. Brisbane would embrace jmj and his awesome music…

  11. Nicholas Penny says:

One has to remember how ignorant council can be. When Perth had the opportunity of hosting the F1 Grand Prix in the 1980’s it was turned down due to the fact they believed “The America’s Cup” was to dominate the sporting events and the F1 was too much to handle as well.

  12. Robi says:

    The newest idea is 2015…

  13. Chris Storey says:

Jean Michel Jarre forget Perth , Canberra would be ideal for one of his amazing concerts!
Anyway where ever in OZ I’ll be there if it ever happens!
    Chris

  14. Markus says:

You incompetent morons – your worried about the fact he is not a household name in Perth and you have seemingly made that judgment without any understanding of his global and local following.

Get with the program, do your research and stop being so fu@king precocial.
Part of your remit as council officers is to promote the beautiful city we have and yet your current approach shows less vision than a small town PTA.- its not visionary, its not forward thinking and it draws into question why council officers are even there, when they are looking to pass on an event of iconic proportions from a promotional, marketing and revenue perspective. – I am astounded

Maryanne Bell your a legend don’t give up

  15. Sandy.Mijota says:

SHAME ON YOU (LORD MAYOR & THE COUNCILORS OF PERTH)HOW STUPID CAN YOU GUYS BE????? THIS ARTIST IS WORLD KNOWN FOR HIS MUSIC & LIGHT SHOWS AND YOU WANT TO PLAY SILLY BUGGERS!!!!!!!!! YOU ALL SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES!!!!!!! PEOPLE FLOCK FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO ATTEND ANY JEAN MICHEL JARE CONCERTS; AND PERTH WOULD BE NO EXCEPTION. GET YOU ACT TOGETHER AND SUPPORT SOMETHING THATS A ONCE IN A LIFE TIME OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PEOPLE OF WA & EVEN AUSTRALIA TO WITNESS, BECAUSE IF YOU DONT AND HE ENDS UP PLAYING ELSEWHERE IN AUSTRALIA YOU WILL BE GETTING MY BILL FOR MY FLIGHTS & ACCOMMODATION TO ATTEND HIS CONCERT (WHERE EVER THAT MAY BE IN AUSTRALIA):
FANS OF JEAN MICHEL JARE, LETS BAN TOGETHER AND IF HE DOESNT END UP PERFORMING HERE IN PERTH AND PLAYS ELSEWHERE IN AUSTRALIA MY SUGGESTION TO YOU IS THAT YOU TOO SEND YOUR BILL TO THE ABOVE FOR YOUR FLIGHTS & ACCOMMODATION TO WHAT EVER CITY JEAN MICHEL JARE ENDS UP PERFORMING IN. I’D BET THAT WOULD BE AN EYE OPENER WHEN THE LORD MAYOR & COUNCILORS GET ALL OF OUR BILLS THRU THE MAIL!
PEOPLE WHO GET INTO POWER & THESE POSITIONS FORGET THAT ITS THE PEOPLE OF PERTH WHO VOTED FOR THEM AND ITS THE PEOPLE OF PERTH WHO WONT EVER VOTE FOR THEM AGAIN, SO NO MORE JOBS. YOU HAVE BEEN PUT INTO THESE POSITIONS TO WORK FOR THE PEOPLE OF THIS CITY, NOT TO WORK AGAINST THEM FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!!!!!

  16. Mike Goodall says:

COME ON PERTH COUNCIL,YOU MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF JEAN MECHELE JARRE BUT THE REST OF THE WORLD HAS. DON’T STUFF UP THIS ONCE IN A LIFE- TIME OPPORTUNITY FOR THE MOST SPECTACULAR WAY TO SHOWCASE THE WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY OF PERTH WA. ONCE YOU GET OFF YOUR HANDS AND NAME THE DATE OF HIS CONCERT, JUST WATCH THE DOLLARS THAT WILL IMMEDIATELY ROLE INTO THE WA ECONOMY THEN SIT BACK AND WATCH, NOT JUST AUSTRALIA,BUT THE ENTIRE WORLD BE TRANSFIXED WITH THE JARRE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME.

  17. Richard Comben says:

Lisa Scaffidi and the PCC are idiots…as for Eventscorp, they have now exposed their short sighted moronic views.Jarre is a WORLD class performer..his fan base is the world!!! I know people who want to travel from North America and Europe just to see this!
Pity he will be strutting his stuff in Brisbane or Melbourne!!!Welcome to Perth, boring one day..backward the next!!!

  18. David Loermans says:

Yes Perth is a beautiful city to live in, but we need drawcard events like this to provide the impetus that local businesses are screaming out for.

We have already given up a world class rally championship event (said to be amongst the best run in the world when we had it in WA\’s south west region), so just what does Perth\’s future hold besides being a labour pool for mining?

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, wherever it happens I will be booking tickets, but we can\’t afford to look this gift horse in the mouth.

  19. Harkness says:

Typical Perth & WA….They talk the talk but never deliver! They want to show the new Perth of….who too???? They don’t want people to come and then complain about no monies coming into WA…of course not they allow all big things for over Australia and bypass us…We live here and surely our opinions count? Come On Perth get yourself pulled into the present…We want big concerts..Jean Michael jarre would be huge and an awesome concert. if you don’t want to put the money in let Freo!!! Does it matter where it is? After all the West Australian 15.12.12 states that they powers to be are looking for big events…must be only ones they want to see!

That’s just great! Too bad for those of us who relied on the information – and brochure – that was published earlier this year on the ITM website and booked flights from the east coast to Perth…that’s several hundred dollars down the drain!

  21. Russel says:

Good news for me because I live near Sydney, so hopefully the concert will now move to Sydney 🙂

Besides Perth is awfully expensive to fly to. Now I can enjoy a genuinely free concert! yay! 🙂

PERTH TAKE NOTE – JEAN MICHEL JARRE BEST WORD’S TO HIS FANS taken from Destination Docklands concert 1988 –

“if I am hear tonight it’s because of you, Thanks you for your support, nothing will stop us now” – JMJ

  24. Kevin White says:

I am From Scotland & if this concert was to go ahead this would be great for Perth & the concert would be excellent I am sure. I would be making the trip down to see it.

  25. Megan says:

I have a bunch of friends from over east dying to find out when this is happening so they can book flights & accommodation! This is a once in a lifetime event, and they really don’t want to miss out.

If Perth don’t get their act together, we’ll miss out on something HUGE that will set precedence for other big acts coming here.

Pull your finger out Perth! Grow up and join the modern age of caring about the people that live here. Give us a show to remember!

  26. Glenn says:

A concert of this size and spectacle is not really about Jarre\’s local fanbase. Many of his major concerts have been held in places where he is not a household name, but he still drew big audiences, sometimes millions. Through advertising and promotion, general music fans will come to realize that this is a once in a lifetime spectacle and they will flock to the concert area even if they dont have any Jarre records at home.

Jarre hardly had 3.5 million fans in Moscow or 1.3 million fans in Houston, but the event itself was enough. Past JMJ concerts prove that. Now, if only half of the proposed audience will require one single hotel room for this event, that alone will generate 5.7 million AUD in extra income, and the incoming sales tax alone will be enough to cover sponsorates. (Not sure if Perth has 40.000 hotel rooms though, but income can easily be calculcated.)

  27. Robi says:

    Shame…

  28. Jean Batman says:

It is a shame if the concert does not go ahead! Perth location really looks nice!

  29. Jean Batman says:

I hope this Perth spectacular goes ahead. Fingers crossed.

  30. Equinox IV says:

Does anyone have any further info on this gig? The information booklet that was “spotted on ITM’s website” has been removed.

Is the concert still scheduled for 23 March 2013?
Any idea of any official announcements?

  31. Jean Batman says:

Can’t wait for this Perth concert to go on !
Thanks to OnePerth for keeping us informed.

  32. Mitchell says:

Can’t wait for him to visit Perth; it will hopefully be my first live concert!

  33. stuart says:

I am so there it isn’t funny

  34. Marco Blom says:

… says it will be March 2013 . Does anyone have official sources … ?
    _________________________
Official word is now ‘first half’ of 2013, rather than March, as reported elsewhere.

A bit of a moveable feast at present. But the promoter is adamant the gig will go on – at some stage.

  35. Robi says:

    Jarre in Perth now!

  36. Tom Barnsley says:

Check out “Oxygene – 30th Anniversary” from iTunes. Download whole re-mastered ‘album’ for ONLY AUD$7.50. !!!! Fantastic.
I believe they sold 12 million copies of Oxygene in France alone. Is it still the highest grossing ‘album’ ever in France?
N.B. Australia’s Peter Weir used “Oxygene II” in the great film about the Australians at Gallipoli, (Gellipoli in Turkey) . One of the stars was Mel Gibson, a great actor / director / and owner of Icon Productions. Have a look at Apocalypto. This great film was directed/produced by Mel Gibson.

    Back to JMJ
Look up “Oxygene 7 to 12?” by JMJ.

How does one buy a ticket for what should be a great concert?

  37. Robi says:

Does someone still believe the concert goes ahead? I don’t.

  38. Robi says:

So how was the sponsoring meeting last week? 😉

It has long been overdue, for a person of his great talents to come to Perth.there has been an other band of same qualities and vintage,TANGERINE DREAM.(2 concerts)I am sure people of Perth will be taken into the dream music of Jean Michael Jarre.

  40. andrew peter collins says:

I hope he comes to Melbourne. His 1986 Houston concert was a trip with his Laser Harp.

  41. Robi says:

    Suspecious silence…

  42. Glenn says:

Would gladly fly in from Scandinavia to see this concert, and to spend a week in Perth. It will be a unique show never seen anywhere again, so I really hope – mostly for the locals – that funding can be secured and that investors understand this is a golden opportunity to create something unique for Perth only.

  43. P. Jackson says:

Clandestine? City of Perth? How so? The Council approved use of Langley Park for this concert at an open Council meeting, as it does with most similar proposals.

We’ll be coming from Copenhagen, Denmark:-)

  45. dpmmusic says:

I hope that they’ll broadcast this on Euronews (ok, the concert is not in Europe, but since Jarre has agreed to work together on further project, this would be a good opportunity).

Or at least release a blu-ray/dvd of the concert.

  46. Joe Howard says:

Wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful news. I hope all of Austrailia embraces this concert and Perth benefits so much from this. Surely the influx of people into the city to see the show will outweigh the costs of the show itself.

Surely WA Government agency Eventscorp will chime in with a few spondoolies to get the concert over the line.

Shall check this out with them tomorrow.

  47. Tim Cracknell says:

Wow I’m wrapped now. I’ve been a avid Jean Michel Jarre fan since I was about four when my late father would often play his Oxygene LP. I dreamt even at a young age that I would one day compose music similar on synthesizers and also dreamt that Jarre would one day play in Perth. Well 26 years later and I compose music with synthesizers and I never thought that JMJ would ever perform here although I guess that this may just become a reality. Well done Jean Michel Jarre and The City Of Perth council! Legends!

  48. Dean says:

I have been a fan since Oxygene came out on album/cassette.. Way back in 1976 or 77.. I have been buying all his music ever since.. Its what got me into electonic music.. I love the stuff.. If he comes to Perth it will be a once in a lifetime event for me.. The god of electronic music in my backyard.. Whoo hoo…

  49. Harjinder says:

    Senga 🙂

  51. Christine says:

I was at his concert in Houston 1986 and to this day have not seen anything as fabulous. If we get this concert in Perth it would be a legendary coupe for Perth city organizers. His concerts are awesome and will be enjoyed by all generations – they will be elevated into a whirlwind of music and visual stimulation like nothing on earth. Get me a ticket – make that 100! I’m taking my family and friends. Get me an apartment – Perth will never be the same.

  52. Teil says:

Well…Perth has a history of idiotic decisions….let’s hope they break the trend and approve this concert…What an amazing opportunity!

  53. chris ambrose says:

  54. Joe Howard says:

This is a no-brainer really. I for one, would love to fly from Ireland to see JMJ again, and his troop of fans would descend on Perth, as would so many people just to see one of his famous shows. I understand that this kind of show is hugely expensive but believe me, it would be so worth it in terms of tourism, local businesses and simply the joy that his shows bring. In a world of misery and economic doom, something like this can only bring happiness to so many people.

  55. Its great to see some cities still dare to think big and visionary 🙂

Been to lots of JMJ concerts around the world and Perth is now on my to do list 😀

  56. Chris Sifniotis says:

I’ve been a home grown Jarre fan for seven or so years now. I absolutely love his music and have a good deal of his old and new albums. It is one of my greatest wishes to finally have the ability to listen to Aero in its original media; Dolby 5.1.
This concert won’t just put Perth on the map, it has the chance, remote as it may or may not be, to put Jarre into the Australian music scene. He has such a talent of creating soundscapes with his music as well as his infamous light shows all across Europe and parts of Asia, I find it a real shame that he is nothing here, just a stray Oxygene track here and there.
The concert also holds the greater possibility to hold more concerts in Australia, and in other cities. ‘Destination Darling Harbour’, ‘Oxygene in Melbourne’, these may no longer be names I only just made up right now.

  57. Robi says:

Hope it goes ahead and will be a total spectacle!

  58. Michael Smith says:

I have been so many of his concerts around the world I would not rule coming to Perth..

Just hope he gets all the thumbs up for the goahead..

  59. Marc A says:

This will put Perth on the map, can’t wait.
Wanted to see him ever since I saw the Huston Texas show

  60. Jean Batman says:

I\’m sure jarre fans from around the world will be pleased to spend some time in
Perth and buy their airplane tickets !

    Regards,
    Jean from France.
